undyed yarn – silk, silk blends, wool, paper

Undyed yarn skein

My primary focus is on the softest fibers available, yet with a concern for strength. So most of the yarns I carry are wool/silk blends. These protein-based yarns dye beautifully with the Minnesota Series Dyes™ (exception: the Paper Yarn, being a cellulose fiber, requires fiber-reactive dyes). These yarns are also elegant in their natural, undyed state. Some yarns are very unique and quantities and/or availability may be limited. Contact me if you need a larger quantity than is in stock or if you desire a different length/weight skein.

Silk types may be either Cultivated (aka Bombyx) or Tussah. Cultivated silk is the finest silk available. Tussah silk is also considered a wild silk and has a slightly larger diameter than cultivated silk.

I carry more undyed yarns at my occasional market booth. Check the Saga Hill homepage for upcoming locations.

SH-10-207 – Silk/Linen
65% Cultivated Silk/35% Linen
This yarn has a high silk content, so its drape is soft rather than crisp. When dyed with acid dyes, the linen "tints" rather than being dyed, so the result is an elegant heathered color. (Origin: Switzerland)
Weaving: 30/2 construction – May be used for warp or weft. 30 epi
Knitting: Cobweb Lace weight – (10+ st in/2.5 cm; #000–1 US/1.5–2.25 mm needle)

$30.00 per skein

SH-20-092 – Silk/Linen Fleck
50% Tussah Silk/50% Linen
I typically do not carry commercially-dyed yarns and fibers but this yarn is an exception due to its unique beauty. This is truly an extraordinary yarn for weaving or knitting. The silk ply ranges in tone from a dark black to charcoal. The linen ply consists of a natural, unbleached linen. The overall effect is delicate, with occasional tufts of linen. (Origin: Italy)
Weaving: Use for weft only.
Knitting: Cobweb Lace weight – (10+ st in/2.5 cm; #000–1 US/1.5–2.25 mm needle)

SH-0006 – "Lotus"
60% Superwash Merino Wool/20% Yak/20% Cultivated Silk
One skein is enough for a pair of women's-size lace socks! This popular, meticulously spun, 3-ply Italian yarn is a beautiful soft natural grey. This is a very stable yarn. Due to the well-spun ply, the shorter yak fibers surprisingly do NOT have a tendency to bloom out of the yarn. Very soft and drapes well in knit and weave. When dyeing, the combination of superwash merino wool, yak and silk produce spectacular colors. (Origin: Italy)
Weaving: May be used for warp or weft.
Knitting: 7-8 st in/2.5 cm; #1–3 US/2.25–3.25 mm needle
3 ply; 404 yd/369 m; 3.5 oz/100 g skein

100% Manila Hemp
This paper yarn is softer and more wearable than many others, but still has lovely papery characteristics. Even though it's paper, it's surprisingly strong. You can knit it and then wash it gently and it's beautiful. It even dyes beautifully with fiber reactive dyes and (although not tested to date) should take natural dyes equally well. The rustling sound it makes is other-worldly. Weave it into your weft or knit it with large needles for crispness and space. It's a superb counterpoint to soft, drapey silks. (Origin: Japan)
Weaving: Not recommended for warp.
Knitting: Novelty weight – use large needles.

SH-30-009 – Silk Gima

This yarn comprises a group of singles that are somewhat "glued" together to form a flat ribbon-like yarn. It reflects light in a most enchanting way. It has a lot of body, which softens a wee bit as the bond within the group relaxes. It's very cool knit, and provides texture and light for weaving. (Origin: Japan)
